About

Hi!!! Thanks for visiting. Here’s a bit more on me and why I’m doing the trip.

I graduated from Lougborough in 2004 and spent a few years bumbling about the world wondering what to do with my life. So, thought how brilliant it would be to be paid for travelling and learning about the deepest corners of our great Earth. Hence my MA in International Journalism. However, the current financial climate hasn’t been too kind to many, especially recent graduates.

I read the following article about a girl who grew her armpit hair, wrote about it, and got a job. Is this really what you need to do to get a job nowadays? Gordon Bennet!!!
So, on the back of recently completing Lands End-John O’Groats and a trip to Rwanda I devised the idea of cycling to the World Cup. I’d just applied for a job and said to my friend, Rob Moulin, “if I don’t get this I’ll cycle to the WC and write about it.” Alas, I didn’t get the job. I’m unemployed, un-mortgaged, unattached and 27-these factors are “hopefully” not going to be associated with me forever! The only thing holding me back was my lovely mother who refused to let me go alone. I assured her I was doing it, but for her sanity, I’d find someone to join me. None of my friends could commit so Gavski suggested trying the Metro. Although I cringed at the thought of 1000s of commuters seeing my desperate mug staring up at them, if it got the job done then i could soak up the embarrassment.

And it did! Nearly 400 replied. I whittled it down and met up with my potential pedal pals, with my good friend Amy Pollock as a panelist. I went from not being able to get an interview myself to actually conducting the interviews.

So, here I am, about to embark on an 8000 mile cycle across Africa to make the World Cup, with 3 guys I’ve only just met. The team is: Dickon Broadhurst, who had planned to cycle the Americas until a friend pulled out, John Walton, who’d taken part in a Channel Swim relay and had been a target for a bull, and Duncan Hills, who cycled from London to Taiwan for a £1 bet.

The aim is to get to South Africa for the World Cup and hopefully manage to find a job on my return.

Wish us luck!!!!
